Rock ‘n’ Roll Scaffolders
“I’m gonna live for the music
give it everything you got
live for the music
you know you’re gonna find a lot
to ease your mind”
Bad Company
Superior Scaffold rocks people’s troubles away every day and even some nights. Yes, it’s our job to ease the minds of our clients and their audience so they can do what they do best.
We not only protect the customers from the myriad of construction projects that can go on but we also allow businesses to remain open while said project rocks on.
Consider us the “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Scaffolders” of the tri-state area.
And how do we do it? By composing the best scaffolding for the job. Just like this overhead protection (canopy) at Jacobs Music in Center City, Philadelphia, PA. It’s not big, it’s not fancy but it looks great and, most importantly, it does the job. Not only did we provide a sidewalk shed (using scaffold frames, steel beams, aluminum beams and debris panels) but if you look carefully there is a small section of shoring as well. It was all part of their facelift to give the storefront more exposure with new windows and entryway.
We also put a Jacobs Music banner on the ends of the canopy – insuring customers knew exactly which proprietor was behind the stage (so to speak).
This allowed Jacobs Music to rock on!
You can see the finished results here. On this job, you could say that we lived for the music.
In all fairness, they are a refined piano merchant so with that I give you…
In their day, these guys were the true rock stars!

Suspended Scaffold & Overhead Protection Watermark Building
The Watermark at Logan Square is a retirement community in Center City, Philadelphia providing independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and memory care in a continuum of care. Crews were doing a mixture of façade repair, restoration, caulking, painting and patchwork.
This was a multi-discipline set up for the Superior Scaffold Dream team. (Suspended scaffold & Frame divisions) We had to assemble an outrageous overhead protection system (canopy, sidewalk shed) at the base of the building on multiple levels so they could keep the business up and running while repairs took place overhead. And the swing stage team had to get crews access to the entire façade of the building.
And that’s just what we did. Check out the pics.
There were a couple of long runs of canopy frames on both sides of the building as well as a few special accommodations for the loading docks and entryways. You can see that the scaffold had to be erected around the shape of the front of the building.
Then system scaffold was used to erect 4 towers at the loading dock to carry the long aluminum beams and canopy overhead.
They also needed to be decked in and debris paneled so the swings could sit on top of them.
Speaking of shapes, check out the top of the building, a very unique shape to give the top two floors more real estate and view – but massive trouble for the swing stages that needed to be hung off the sides to get to the façade for repairs and patching.
Superior’s resident “king of swing” Bob Sarkisian designed a double-wide swing stage that would fill the gap or space in between the stages and the building so workers could get up close and personal to the façade. It was another smart solution to a potential problem.
The Watermark Retirement Community building never looked so good! She is back to her old glory.

Overhead protection for John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School
In honor of 40 years of SNL (Saturday Night Live) I thought I’d post some pics of our emergency services overhead protection job at Hallahan Catholic Girl’s School.
Superior Scaffold was called in to provide overhead protection so crews could repair pieces of the façade that were falling off. If you look carefully, on this photo, you can see some of the damaged masonry work covered by blue plastic.
Superior quickly erected this canopy to protect students and pedestrians coming in and around the school. Our emergency services line is open 24 hours a day and we specialize in getting crews out to a job site and solutions in place within 8 – 12 hours. (Tops in the industry).
Masonry crews needed to get in there and repoint and repair some of the brick and mortar before there was more damage. It’s quite normal on buildings this old to need an occasional touch up over time. It was built in 1912.
Superior provided this overhead canopy using scaffold frames. It was 65’ long by 8’ high X 8’ wide and incorporated aluminum beams, decking, screw jacks, cross braces, U heads, and debris panels. It also included our fabulous yellow warning banners at each end.
Here you can see the intricate detail of the school logo that was etched into stone for this masthead.
I didn’t notice, but I guess all around the top of the build, carved in stone, are the faces of famous Catholic women.
And now you are finally asking what does this post have to do with the 40th anniversary special of SNL? Well, when I saw Molly Shannon dressed as Sister Mary Catherine Gallagher it made me think of this job.

Some history on the school:
John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School, located at 311 N. Nineteenth Street and originally called Girls’ Catholic High School, was finished in June 1912 and opened on September 18, 1912, to 326 students. Financed by Mary E. Hallahan McMichan (1861-1925), it was renamed for her brother John W. Hallahan in 1925 in accordance with her will. Cut into the stone at the top of the building are etchings of famous women who were dedicated to Catholic life and education.

Overhead protection for an icon at 6th and Walnut, downtown Philly
Now, if you’ve ever owned a white car you know what a royal pain it is to keep clean in the winter. That white paint shows every piece of dust, dirt, and grime that you pick up driving around.
So, imagine if you are a white building, built in 1913, 7 to 8 stories tall, smack dab in the middle of hustling, bustling Philadelphia. There are cars, buses, trucks, trains and pedestrians all kicking up dust around your base. And when the wind and rain kick up all of that debris floats upwards and sticks right to your sides. And just like your white automobile this giant structure gets dirty.
So every now and again you have to give her a bath to get her back to her former glory. And that’s just what happened here. Superior Scaffold was called to the iconic Penn Mutual Life Insurance Building (or Penn Mutual) to help out.
In order to get crews up to do the power washing necessary Superior Scaffold had to install some overhead protection (canopy) for the pedestrians below. This was a good sized canopy too – traveling from 6th and Walnut around to 6th and St. James.
It was a pretty level surface so crews used heavy duty frames to build the sidewalk shed. You can seen in the pics we’ve also got screw jacks and base plates, aluminum beams, U heads, our glorious red debris panels, and our wonderful yellow tripping hazard banners.
This is a good sized canopy and it helped crews get this old building back to her former glory.
We were glad to help. If you need overhead protection, canopy, sidewalk shed or suspended scaffold, call Bob at (215) 743-2200 and he will take care of you.

St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children – Dual purpose scaffold bridge and canopy
When St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia needed to construct a pedestrian bridge from their new building to their existing parking garage – they called Superior Scaffold.
We erected a scaffold bridge that had to serve two purposes, one, to get crews beneath the new pedestrian bridge so they could finish construction – without stopping traffic below, and two, to get pedestrians safely across the street from the parking garage to the main hospital.
This was the main entrance so it had to remain open at all times. We came in at night and diverted traffic while we erected the scaffolding. We built support towers on each side of the road using system scaffold, and then we connected them with 26’ trusses.
We also skinned the decking with plywood and then put debris netting around the top for added protection.
We also built a stair tower to allow crews access to the new bridge construction while also keeping traffic flowing beneath. (Thanks to Pat for the Artsy photo – he’s turning into a regular Ansel Adams out there).
You can see the canopy we attached to the bridge that follows the sidewalk down perpendicular to the bridge tower.
This allowed pedestrians to travel from the parking garage, across the street, beneath the new construction and into the main entrance of the hospital.
This is a cool dual purpose scaffold bridge and overhead protection system.
Call Superior Scaffold at 215 743-2200 today and ask for Pat. He’ll show you the right way to erect a system like this. He’ll also take pretty pictures that you can use on your website or scrapbook.
You can see the strong platform we created for crews to work on. You can also see some of the massive steel support beams going into the new pedestrian bridge.

Iconic PNB letters come down in Philadelphia via helicopter
Sunday was a big day in downtown Philadelphia as the skyline was forever changed. The giant PNB letters that adorned the top of the majestic, 28 story, Philadelphia National Bank building for almost a half a century were brought down via helicopter.
This isn’t the first time crews tried to get the 16′ tall, 3000 lb letters down. They attempted it back in August but were only able to remove 3 letters in a four hour span. This time they removed all of the remaining 9 letters in just around 45 minutes. The helicopter landed the letters onto waiting trucks just in front of the City Hall building. (See news videos – pretty cool stuff)
Why are we posting this on our blog? Well, I’ll tell you. Originally, this was supposed to be done when there was diminished pedestrian traffic – however, there were a few problems. Unbeknownst to crews, because there was no lightning rod system on the building, years of lightening strikes had actually welded the letters to the their framework. So when they thought they had loosened all of the bolts the helicopter couldn’t lift the letters because they were still welded to their frames. So plan B went into effect and we were called in.
Superior Scaffold erected the overhead protection around the base of the PNB building that allowed crews to work on the letters above preparing them for the move while businesses like McCormick & Schmicks could operate as normal below.
Keeping businesses operating as usual is our specialty and this was no different.
Superior Scaffold built a canopy around the McCormick Schmicks steakhouse at ground level on the 1 South Broad location. (Located right across the street from City Hall in the heart of Center City) We erected an 8’ wide X 100’ long X 10’high overhead protection system using our frame scaffold and aluminum beams, The scaffolding also had 4’ debris panels and was 300 psf rated. It was finished off with our lovely bright yellow warning banners.
Crews waited for a weekend with limited pedestrian traffic to shut down the roads into the area and then went into action. And on Sunday – the plan went off without a hitch!
See the news footage from NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox and more here:
If you need giant letters removed from the top of your building and need to either get to them or protect your customers below – call Superior Scaffold today at (215) 743-2200 and ask for Pat. He’ll fly right up there and take care of you (He has wings you know, and not the fake Red Bull kind either.)
Bell Telephone, Verizon Building getting a facelift – Overhead Protection
The old Bell Telephone building at 1631 Arch St. in downtown Philadelphia is getting a facelift.
Unlike the normal facelift, where you book an appointment with the doctor and they set a time and place for the procedure to take place. And in this day and age you’d better get plenty of recommendations or you might end up like this….
Oh my…
I guess I never really understood why perfectly normal looking people feel the need to mess themselves up like this but then again – we are behind the scenes and can throw our stones from high atop our glass houses. But I digress.
The point is that sometimes even the best laid planes don’t go as they should. For what ever reason this job has been put on hold. Could be that something didn’t pass inspection… The company is trying to figure out just what they are capable and willing to do to this glorious old building built in 1915.
I’m not sure. But we even made the latest round of google camera captures in their maps update.
But I do know that this is one great looking canopy (overhead protection).
It’s 8′ wide X 150′ long X 10′ high.
It’s decked in solid with 4′ high debris panels and carries a 300psf rating.
Sometimes waiting for a job to start up is like waiting in a room full of mirrors… You really never know where to look – you can only hope that someone smashes in and starts the project. Just ask the Axis.
And a great version by my girl Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders.
And if you need overhead protection that is the best in the business – call Superior Scaffold today at (215) 743-2200. Visit our website here at www.superiorscaffold.com to see examples of our work.

Safety is our number one priority
It’s true. I was going through some recent pics of some posts (say that 10 times) and I noticed that they all had one thing in common.
Can you see it?
I would hope it was pretty darn obvious.
Unfortunately, in this day and age with all of the social media, texts, cell phones, and constant distractions, the bright red frames weren’t enough to get people’s attention. We had to design an even brighter attention getter to help people look up. And unless you were absolutely blasted on Boone’s Farm or stumbling from a Ray Rice smash to the head you should be able to see these.
I certainly saw them.
So let it be known that we at Superior Scaffold are always trying to make it safer for the public out there. Are we proud of these? Not really. But they do serve their purpose. And if people are going to continue to meander the streets of everywhere with their heads down firmly planted in their mobile devices then this is what we will have to do to make sure something catches their eye to make sure they make it through safely.
So the next time you wander through a construction site in anywhere USA – take a moment to look up and actually see where you are going so you don’t trip over our BRIGHT YELLOW WARNING TRIPPING HAZARD signs.
Thank you.

Big and Tall Aluminum Canopy for Torre Men’s Store, Philadelphia, PA
How fitting is this? A super tall canopy at Torre Big & Tall Men’s store at 1217 S. Broad St, Philadelphia, PA. Now, I know what you’re thinking. Did we erect this jumbo sized overhead protection system for all of the giant men that enter the store from the street? Well, yes and no. There are some very tall customers that shop at Torre’s (that boasts the biggest and best independent collection of tall designer fashions in the word) but it’s really to protect those clients from the demolition of the building next door.
Yes, they are tearing down the 3rd Regiment Armory building for a new apartment building and multi-use structure as part of the redevelopment of the area. And what a great history and story on that old building… You can read more about that at the bottom of this post.
So Superior Scaffold erected this is a double-decker aluminum overhead protection system. It’s two stories tall! It’s not as long as most of the ones we erect but it’s taller than most. The dimensions are 28’ high X 10’ wide X 32’ long.
Aluminum beams rest on support beams on one end and on the building parapet on the other.
It’s decked in with 4’ high debris panels. Debris netting is cantilevered up and out beyond the panels for added protection.
The canopy is rated at 300 psf.
Again, this canopy was erected to protect clients as the 3rd Regiment Armory building was being demolished.
There is a huge history with that structure dating back to Benjamin Franklin. You can read about it here:
Only Superior builder/salesman, Pat “Laddy” McAndrew can answer why they decided the build this tall canopy the way they did. He might also be able to answer why such a beautiful old structure had to be torn down next door as well. Either way, for all of your scaffold, scaffolding needs call Pat at Superior Scaffold – 215 743-2200 today!

Amtrak rides the Superior Scaffold rails around the entire building
Superior Scaffold is proud to be providing scaffolding support for Amtrak’s renovation of their 30th St. Station in downtown Philadelphia. The historic building that opened in 1933 will get a much needed facelift. It’s an incredible looking structure and can you just imagine what it’s going to be like when it’s finished? Wow…
Amtrak wants to make the neoclassical 30th Street Station a more welcoming gateway to West Philadelphia and Center City. The 30th Street Station handles 120 Amtrak trains, 960 SEPTA trains, and 26 NJ Transit trains each weekday. More than four million Amtrak passengers went through the station last year.
Superior’s first order of business was to erect canopies and sidewalk protection around the entire building – and that’s a good sized building. The station is a hustling, bustling metropolis all of its own with cars, buses, and lots of people all the time. Those are just some of the challenges faced when erecting scaffolding around a busy building like this. For that reason, most of the work was done at night as pedestrian and vehicle traffic was diminished.
I love this part of the description because we actually get to see BEFORE and AFTER shots of the scaffolding (something we don’t always get). But this gives you an insider’s look at just what goes into scaffolding an historic building like this. It also lets us see some the challenges crews face.
The jersey barriers on each side were quite the problem. Superior had to scaffold around all the physical obstacles, lamp posts, bollards, parking meters, taxi cabs, pedestrians.
All of 30th Street Station is hollow underneath so Amtrak required Superior to build canopies on top of barriers to distribute weight load.
This was done so scaffolding can be installed on top of the canopy to do facade restoration.
Amtrak even specified the type and color of paint…a beautiful soft green. Customizing the look and color of a canopy is an option that many of our clients choose.
This is going to be an 8 – 10 year project.
Superior had to construct overhead protection at different elevations for buses, cars and pedestrians.
The biggest challenge was finding jersey barriers with one flat side as Amtrak mandated.
Fortunately Rob Buckley from Buckley Construction had what the doctor ordered. 177 – 12′ barriers.
Next challenge was setting them in place. We used a lull and a unique clamp made just for lifting the barriers.
We also had to cut many of them to fit into Amtrak’s layout (parking meters, doors, etc.) It’s not easy cutting concrete barriers!
Some shots to give you an idea of the scope of work with the canopies and overhead protection.

Some of the detailed work that goes into doing an extensive job like this.
These structures are just the first phase in an extensive renovation. They have to be strong enough to support additional scaffoling when they start renovating the facade of the building.
Superior provides scaffolding for renovations, inspections, new construction – just about any type of project.
