Scaffolding Firestone Library Lobby, Princeton University, NJ
We have been all over the exterior of the Firestone Library, on the Princeton campus, doing renovations so this time I thought I’d take you inside.
Just like our work on the outside, Superior Scaffold was brought in by GC, Massimino Building Corp. to give access to the entire ceiling area at the entrance of the library.
Crews needed to demo the old ceiling to replace and upgrade ductwork directly above the entryway and lobby.
The biggest challenge was that the ceiling encompassed the entire entrance/exit of the library and it had to remain open for students the entire time work was being done.
The other challenge was that our work deck also needed to be outside of the entryway with as few legs as a possible so people could get through the doors easily.
How did our guys accomplish this? By erecting a work deck in two sections roughly 40’ wide by 56’ long with long trusses spread between system scaffold legs to distribute the weight.
This allowed the legs to be put strategically for the least bit of interference with pedestrian traffic.
The work deck was skip plank and plywood and allowed crews to get to every inch of the ceiling for work.
Here you can see the new ceiling going up. It’s a super sturdy and enclosed work space.
We are proud of the work we’ve done in and around the Firestone Library and for Princeton University. This was another job that went off on time and on budget. If you are in the area, I urge you to stop by and check out this historic building. It’s really quite something to see.
And as always, if you need access, scaffolding, scaffold call Tommy at 215 743-2200 today and he’ll educate you on the possibilities. Or log on to www.superiorscaffold.com to see more work.
And I couldn’t resist today’s musical number. It’s from Animal House and has more to do with college than a library but it’s classic.
And since we are talking about a library – how about this classic clip from Star Trek.

Going off the deep end with scaffolding…
The Princeton Medical Center at Plainsboro, NJ is adding on to their illustrious hospital with two new rehabilitation pools. The crews needed to get access to the ceiling to do some repairs and additions. Well, with swimming pools spanning the entire room it makes it a bit difficult to reach up that high.
So they called Pat McAndrew at Superior Scaffold and said, “Help.” Since they had spent most of their budget on these incredible pools they were looking for a low cost alternative to just scaffolding the entire pools all the way up to the ceiling. They also wanted to use Baker/Painter scaffolds to roll from one end of the pool area ceiling to another.
So, they creatively devised a plan that would put an 8’ scaffolding tower down into the center of the large pool from the 3’ shallow end down to the 9’ deep end. They used 8’ horizontal trusses at deck height and then ran aluminum joists from side walls to trusses at 16” centers. The entire thing was then topped off with a deck of ¾” plywood. This would allow the baker scaffold to roll freely around the entire room while allowing crews to reach to the ceiling. You can see just how wide and deep this room is.
Now, the small pool was a bit different. They rested aluminum joists on the concrete side walls at 16” centers and then topped that off with plywood. Since it was only 18’ in diameter the aluminum joists would be able to support all of the weight put upon them.

Superior Scaffold at Frick Laboratory, Princeton University, NJ
Superior Scaffold was called out to the Frick Laboratory at Princeton University to build scaffolding for crews to get access to the 3 floors of the structure. Crews will then install trash chutes so they can demo the entire interior of the building.
Princeton University officials say that the former Frick lab will remain vacant until renovation funds become available.
The Frick Lab is named after industrialist and art patron Henry Clay Frick (1849-1919). The lab, built in 1929, housed the academic chemistry facilities for over 83 years making it one of the oldest functioning labs in the United States.
It has been moved into the gleaming new Frick Chemistry Lab. It is part of the University’s commitment to green building. You can read about the New Frick Laboratory here.

Renovation at Princeton University Firestone Library
Superior Scaffold was selected to help in the renovation of Princeton’s Prestigious Firestone library because of its long history working with historic buildings on the campus.
In light of the library’s importance in teaching and research at Princeton, the University has committed to a comprehensive renovation of Firestone Library. The renovation is a long-term project that is being done in multiple phases and will take almost 10 years to finish, during which time the library will remain open, and its collections available during normal hours of operation.
Superior erected system scaffold allowing crews to get access to all areas of this monumental restoration and parapet wall replacement project. The library has to remain open while crews do the work. Superior also provided a series of debris netting and trash chutes to the project.
The Harvey S. Firestone Memorial Library opened in 1948 as the first large American university library constructed after World War II. Roughly 1.5 million volumes were moved during the summer of 1948 from Pyne and Chancellor Green Halls, which until then had served as the University’s main library. The library building was expanded in 1971 and again in 1988 and currently has more than 70 miles (110 km) of bookshelves, making Firestone one of the largest open-stack libraries in existence. Though not the largest university library in the world, the library has more books per enrolled student than that of any other university in the United States.
