Multiple access units at Parkway Condominium Complex, 2601 Pennsylvania Ave.
Like many of the older buildings in Philadelphia this one needed a total masonry restoration. After years of being exposed to the elements parts of the masonry needed to be cleaned, repaired and even replaced.
You’ve seen many of the before and after photos on our blog and it’s just truly amazing what these crews can do to revitalize and preserve an old building. Sometimes they make it look better than brand new. Joseph Dugan, Inc is one of the finest in the business and we are always proud to provide them with the equipment necessary to revitalize these older structures.
When it opened in 1939, 2601 Parkway was a premier place to live. Archtectural Forum Magazine reported that with over 500 units, it was the third-largest apartment building in the United States and the first large residence of this scale in Philadelphia. The thirteen-story, three-tiered building featured an elegant restaurant, a beauty parlor, a florist, and other hotel amenities. It was one of the first multi-use buildings in Philadelphia.
In order to get masonry crews safely to the entire façade of this interestingly shaped building, Superior Scaffold had to provide a combination of scaffold, suspended scaffold and mast climber units. Let’s talk about the Fraco mast climbing units first.
The old building’s power grid couldn’t provide enough electricity for a standard mast climber units so estimator Tony P recommended these gas powered Fraco units instead. Not only were they wide and stable enough to handle the crew and material to do a full masonry restoration but they also came with a crane arm that allowed material to be hoisted directly onto the unit itself.
The suspended scaffold or swing stages were the perfect choice to get crews into the recessed areas of the façade.
They are adaptable and easy to move around the hard to reach areas of the building.
System scaffold was used to create an overhead protection system or canopy for the safety of everyone passing beneath – especially the occupants of the building.
Walkways and openings had to remain open and accessible while the restoration work went on overhead.
We also used our system scaffold to build a platform and stair tower to access the Fraco mast climbing unit.
It’s great to see how our estimator can address a client’s needs and provide a combination or variety of access equipment to get the job done.
The finished building is going to look fantastic.
