Superior Scaffold was called upon once again to Bryn Mawr College.  This time we are providing restoration crews access to the facade of the venerable M. Carey Thomas Library.

Known as The Thomas Great Hall, this beautiful building has been designated a National Historic Landmark and has been one of Bryn Mawr College’s most important spaces since it opened in 1902.  It’s a monument to the second president of the college.

This may sound like no big deal but most of the time there is very little access to the site itself and then we have to be careful with the building and landscaping.  Our crews make sure to leave the site just as it was when we got there.

We erected scaffold on both sides of the hall so crews could do a major masonry restoration. Years of hard weather have taken it’s toll on all of the stone and mortar.

We used system scaffold.  It was roughly 110’ long X 5’ wide X 40’ high on both sides.

We also had stair towers for access and Betamax Max Climber 1000 material hoists on both sides.

We placed work decks at each level so crews could get to the windows, stone, parapet and chimney.

Our biggest challenge on this job wasn’t the access to the site or mounting to the building itself but keeping the front entrance open while the work continued.  To do so we had to span the gap using 22’ trusses and then erect the scaffold on top of them.
