Shoring Peermont Substation, Avalon, New Jersey, Phase 2

This is phase 2 of a really unique electrical substation in Avalon, NJ. You really need to read the original story first to really grasp the “coolness” of this. Click on the pic or here:

Phase two for Superior Scaffold entails shoring up the sub-floor or grating so that crews can drive their heavy machinery over it while constructing the structure of this building. And by heavy machinery I’m thinking scissor lifts and such as they add the structural steel to the foundation. Obviously, this isn’t going to be just an ordinary house that sits near the beach. In a nutshell, they are upgrading the power service to this upscale neighborhood and are disguising it as a residential home.

And in order to shore up this grating (subfloor) we had to use giant 4X6 pieces of lumber as joists. We used 1′ and 3′ system legs (trees) with jacks (both top and bottom) U-heads, and more to shore up the platforms.

You can see we had to get creative and use a combination of equipment.

The biggest challenge was working in a 48” tall space. Our guys had to get everything down in there, assembled, leveled and tested. We even had to support some of their existing steel joists.

Some details on the station:

The surrounding upscale residential area has grown substantially in the last several years and has caused the existing substation and transmission lines serving this area to be near their load capacity. This is a substation and we are subcontractor for Ray Angelini, Inc. who is installing the conduit in the new structure.

The existing 23kV substation must be re-built at 69kV to accommodate this load growth and to allow for continued growth in the area. The new substation will benefit the entire 7-mile Island and areas surrounding the causeways to the mainland.
