Swarthmore College, Scaffolding Maxine Frank Singer Hall

This job started before the COVID-19 pandemic and was put on hold, like most construction in Pennsylvania. And when we came back to work – it was a NEW WORLD out there. Like everyone, we’ve had to adapt and adopt a new way of doing business.   New regulations to prevent the spread of the virus on construction sites are now the norm. So much so, that when the Governor gave the go ahead for construction again we were called to install a second stair tower on the opposite end of this giant scaffold to follow the state’s new guidelines for...

Market Street Men of Steel – Cantilever Scaffold

The new owners of 1101 Market St. wanted to make some changes to the entryway and needed to give crews access to a hard to reach area. This section is literally cut into the entrance to the Aramark Tower (now the Jefferson Center) four stories up. Superior Scaffold was called in by GC, Clemens Construction, to create a cantilever scaffold where the base would sit inside the lobby of the building but would allow crews to work out under the section extruding from the building. Our cantilevered work deck had to support everyone from iron workers putting in the new steel,...

Scaffolding & Shoring – Working at the Car Wash

Everyone knows that I like to bring the cool jobs to light no matter how large or small they might be, and this one certainly fits. It’s pretty amazing to think that this car wash works around the clock 365 days a year. I had no idea that this rental car company (at Philadelphia International Airport) washed so many cars in a month.  It's non stop!  I guess it makes sense with cars constantly being rented and turned back in. If something were to happen to the building it would be nearly impossible to shut it down for repairs. Well, that’s exactly...

Scaffolding Philadelphia Museum of Art – Ceiling from the Zhihua Temple

It’s not fancy but this 15’ high, frame scaffold, rolling tower with a stair tower access instead of the usual hook on ladder had to be erected with the utmost care. Our scaffold was erected to help get Chinese researchers and their equipment up to the top of this 500-year-old, hand carved ceiling that was originally installed over a Buddhist altar from the Ming dynasty. The crew is using special equipment to map out the entire structure, inch by inch. Once completed, they will take their photos, data, maps, and bring them back to China where they can analyze the construction and...

Transport Platform at University of Delaware Stadium – “Super Responder”

I heard the term “Super Responder” today. It was in the context of being an Empath. They say that some empathic people have nervous systems that react more quickly and strongly to certain stimuli than others. I personally absorb other people’s emotions whether they are good, bad, anxious or stressed. There are times when I literally have to excuse myself and let them run off of me and get re-centered again. Growing up, my friends and family called me shy, overly sensitive, antisocial and even eccentric, when in truth, I just felt things more heavily than my cohorts. Psychologists use the term...

Scaffolding St. Agatha – St. James Church, 38th and Chestnut

Working on St. Agatha - St. James Church at 38th and Chestnut is one of those rare opportunities where we get to help renovate an historic landmark. St. James was the first Catholic Church on the west side of the Schuylkill River, founded 1850. St. Agatha, 3813 Spring Garden Street, was founded shortly thereafter in 1865. In 1976 after St. Agatha suffered a second fire the two churches were incorporated into St. Agatha-St. James.  So what does it take to be able to work on an historic structure like this? It takes skill, patience, customer service, more skill, and the ability to adapt...

Get up and take another step! Scaffolding First Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia

First Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, built in 1872 (at 21st & Walnut), needed a complete exterior renovation and the good people at Mara were just the ones to git ‘er done. They called Superior Scaffold to help them rock and roll the love all around this beautiful structure. It was complicated but nothing our backline badass builders couldn’t handle. We used system scaffold and decked it out at just about every level. Then we netted it for protection. LIFE IS GOING TO THROW IT AT YOU, PEOPLE. YOU HAVE TWO CHOICES – EITHER STAY ON THE GROUND AND LET THEM WIN OR...

Tommy can you hear me? Shoring parking garage at ACME Markets

How do you help a customer that needs to support the top deck of a parking garage while they repair a cut tension cable and repave? You do what super Superior Scaffold estimator Tommy (can you hear me) Creighton did and that’s erect three system scaffold shoring towers to support the structure. Holy moly, you try saying that sentence three times really fast. The real challenge of this job was making sure that the areas that needed support were shored up so the folks at Structural Maintenance Systems could do their work. Thanks to Alternate Design Solutions for their calculations to make...
