Carry that heavy load: Shoring at New Jersey DOT Maintenance Building
The NJ Department of Transportation is replacing 4 giant windows and lintels at their maintenance garage at 1959 S. Delsea Dr., Vineland, New Jersey and called Superior Scaffold to supply the necessary shoring equipment.
For those who don’t know what a lintel is – a lintel is defined as a structural horizontal block that spans the space or opening between two vertical supports often found over portals, doors, windows, and fireplaces.
So to do the job, there are 3 needle beams per 9’ X 9’ window to carry the roof and the wall above. There are two shoring towers per window, one on each side of the wall to carry the needle beams.
You can see in the photos the exterior towers and the interior towers constructed from hi-load shoring frames. The needle beams pass directly through the building and are supported on each side by steel beams that sit on the u-heads on top of the towers. This holds the weight of the building above it so crews can replace the lintels below.
Each tower is 4’ wide, 7’ long and 15’ high.
They are also in the process of re-roofing the building so our towers had the added weight of the crew and their equipment.
Beside the usual access challenges, the biggest was how to erect the tower around the flag pole out front of the building. In the end, it was decided to go right up next to it. Worked like a charm.
