Surprise, surprise, surprise – Suspended Scaffold everywhere at 400 W. Elm, Conshohocken, PA
This article was originally titled, “Nuthin’ Fancy – But effective!” Based on the third album from Lynyrd Skynyrd. Panned by critics as a rushed effort; I beg to differ. Lead singer, Ronnie Van Zant, was lyrically at the top of his game – cynical as could be with all the world touring and taking him away from his home and friends. And what can you say about Ed King, Gary Rossington and Allen Collins and their southern twangy rock guitar riffs all over the album? What’s this have to do with this job? Well, I’ll tell you.
They named the album Nuthin’ Fancy because that’s what they felt the music was. And you see, originally, this project seemed like a normal siding job – a few swings on one side then move them to other once work was completed. It is those staples that make up a catalog (so to speak). On the surface, this job didn’t seem as fiery as some of the “out of this world” work that Superior Scaffold’s swing master, Bob Sarkisian, does, but I was wrong and had to change the title.
As it turns out, this project was thrown a couple of major curve balls and everyone had to jump into action for GC – McDonald Building Co to get it done – elevating it to number one status. That’s why you see so many suspended scaffold rigs all around this structure.
This job ended up being another top ten hit in a long list of badass projects in Superior’s hat – not to mention an impressive addition to the Conshy skyline.
As, Paul McDonald, from McDonald Building Co (the GC) said, “we normally don’t use suspended scaffold to do this kind of work but we took a chance and tried something different.”
“And we are quite surprised and satisfied with how this turned out. We’ll definitely do it again on another project.”
And by do it again, what he meant was, using swing stages to do the siding work for a new building construction like here at 400 W. Elm St., Conshohocken, PA for a 348 room apartment complex.
There were a few factors that helped them decide to use swings instead of traditional scaffold. Cost being one of biggest factors, but also the ability to quickly and easily get different crews on to the entire face was another.
Crews were working on the entire facade of the building and Superior’s swing stages were just the ticket.

And before anyone panics and cries safety foul – these electric lines on the front are not a close as they look – it’s an optical illusion and all safety standards were followed during the build of this structure.
Our swings are versatile enough to reach from the top down on a 13 story building, like this, where most hi-reaches are too small.
And since they were working with lighter weight materials, swings were just the ticket. Traditional scaffold would work great if they needed to hold more weight.
And because time was of the essence, supported scaffold would have taken too long.
