Scaffold work deck in drop ceiling 32′ above ground, Cherry Hill East High School, NJ
Cameron Newbry might be the Newby to our sales team but in a very short period of time he’s landed and designed some fantastic scaffold builds that bely his years and experience. Yes, he gleaned invaluable knowledge off the great Anthony Pini on his scaffold journey – venturing from general help to masonry to construction elevators and finally landing on scaffolding. So, let’s give him a round of applause for building an impressive book of business in a very short period of time.
How? We’ll, start with this little job at Cherry Hill East High School. Now, I also have to credit our scaffold erectors for putting this together, 32 feet in the air, with only a flimsy drop ceiling below them.
TN Ward called Superior/Sunbelt to come up with a solution to provide a safe work platform and access for iron workers through the drop ceiling high above the auditorium floor to install 400lb pieces of steel to the existing CMU wall.
The big questions were – one, how do we get 400lbs of steel 32’ in the air in an auditorium where no lifts could fit. And two – what is the most efficient and safe way to build a scaffold platform on which the work could be completed when there was nothing in the ceiling?
Our NEWBY used the skill and knowledge he’s gleaned from his mentors and went to work designing a way to get crews on both sides and to the back of the school’s auditorium.
To be as least invasive as possible – we cut 2 – 16’ x 16’ holes on either side in the ceiling where the 32’ towers would be erected. These towers acted as both a means to move the steel and material up as well as an access point to the “boardwalk” for the men. They also included a Betamax material hoist to move the steel and scaffold up into the ceiling.
This plan proved to be a great testament of how creative and quick thinking our carpenters are to build a safe means of access. After all, no one knew what would be in the way after exposing the steel in the drop ceiling.
Once the towers were built and access was established, our carpenters meticulously created an ever changing “boardwalk” on top of the existing steel. They built a 90’ long X 6’ wide boardwalk on both sides. In Between the odd shape of the room and numerous obstacles in the way, our expert erectors were able to complete the job on time and most importantly, safely.
Remember, this is 32′ off the ground in the ceiling!
While intended for the iron workers, this “boardwalk” proved to be helpful for other trades on site to safely complete their work in the drop ceiling as well.
I just love this shot. It shows the detail and craftsmanship our crew took while building this unique scaffold platform.
Yes, this article is to welcome Cameron Newberry to the pantheon of Superior Scaffold estimators and bloggers but I really have to give our crew a shout out as well. They blow my mind every day. So here’s to Zack and Fion! Great job!
Thanks to GC TN Ward for bringing Superior Superior Scaffold/Sunbelt Rentals along for the ride and trusting a pretty savvy new estimator! We look forward to more projects together.

Questions & Answers with Scaffold Guru, and world renowned scaffold and access expert: Shawn MacDonald, from Scaffold Guru.
Question: How do I get into the ceiling 30’ above the ground when there is no access?
Answer: Call a company like Sunbelt Rentals, Superior Scaffold to give you access ideas or design a scaffold that will allow you and your crew to get men and material up there.
Question: What are the ways to get 30’ in the air to do renovation or repair work?
Answer: System Scaffold is certainly the most stable way. Depending upon access to the area below, you can use a scissor lift or a high reach get people up there, but neither are conducive to moving material. It all depends on the amount of weight you will need to support while lifting it into the ceiling. The Betamax hoist can lift approximately 1000 pounds where other methods might not be able to support that.
