Superior Scaffold takes the podium at World of Concrete (WOC) 2024 – SAIA’s Scaffold Builder’s Challenge
Eight of the biggest, baddest scaffold companies in the United States entered the SAIA’s Scaffold Builder’s Challenge, at the 2024 Las Vegas World of Concrete, to vie for the title of best scaffold builder. Each company sent a team of four erectors and one captain to compete in a challenge that not only graded for speed but also safety and sound building practices.
The challenge was held indoors this year, probably a good thing, because it rained for two solid days in Las Vegas! Yep. So much so that many people including myself had flight delays coming into the city. The teams were given a pile of equipment and an area to erect the drawing that was handed out to each team approximately 1 hour before the start of the competition.
The goal was to erect the structure that was on the drawing in the fastest time, using all of the OSHA standards for safety, under the watchful eyes of a group of expert builders who would then scrutinize, critique, examine and then deduct points (that equated to time deductions) if necessary. Then the same procedure would be used on the tear down.
This is where we break away from the competition and talk about our team! Superior Scaffold sent four of our top builders: Cliff, Herman, Bill and Zach, with our road super, Rich as the team captain. These guys collectively have 150 years of scaffold experience so we knew they would rock.
There was a team meeting, the SAIA crew laid out the rules… everyone got in place and the starting gun was fired.
It was fun watching 40 men all speedily trying to erect the exact same creation. (see photos)
I need to give a shout out to Brian Devaney at Sales Solutions, Inc. and the folks at FallTech for providing the PFAS systems for our team – and here’s why.
Safety is the number one priority at this event. And although our current self-retracting lifelines were 100% compliant, our safety director wanted to make sure we wouldn’t lose any points due to a technicality. He reached out to Brian Devaney at Sales Solutions for equipment that would meet the new Class 2 requirements.
Brian told us about a brand-new product line from FallTech that incorporated Kevlar lanyards in a compact, lightweight, leading-edge twin SRL. Brian reached out to the folks at FallTech and they provided the entire team with their new FT-X Edge Core, leading edge SRL and the FT-Iron harness.
So a big thank you to Brian Devaney at Sales Solutions and the folks at FallTech!
Trekker, a local team from the Las Vegas area was the first to finish their tower followed by the rest of the field. It was then the judges turn to measure, take notes, and inspect the scaffold for accuracy and any missed violations. They would then add up the points and deduct the appropriate amount of time on their score sheets.
It was during this inspection period that I took this photo of our guys in front of their scaffold.
Once the judges had done their scoring, the tear down competition commenced. I was so enthralled watching eight teams race to the top of their scaffolds and start dismantling them that I forgot to run video. It was quite the site to see. Again, it was judged on speed, safety and the ability to restack the equipment for pickup.
The Superior Scaffold team rocked the house. They weren’t the fastest but our team did it as safely as they could – given that some of the equipment wasn’t anything they normally use. Can you say pre-fabricated metal toe-board? We had two mistakes that probably cost us first place but everyone had some deductions.
The Superior Scaffold team finished 3rd in the competition with some of the best builders in the US. Congratulations guys!!!! We really set out with the goal to beat those braggards at Skyline Scaffold, the rest would be icing on the cake.
Here’s to our crew and team that made the SAIA’s Scaffold Builder’s Challenge of 2024 a huge success.
We look forward to future competitions!
And since this trip to Vegas was much better than the previous one – let’s roll with Pep and the boys. Enjoy.
