The Quadrangle, commonly known as “the Quad,” is a historic dormitory complex at the University of Pennsylvania that opened in 1895. Designed by Cope and Stewartson, its architecture was inspired by Oxford and Cambridge universities, featuring a blend of medieval and Renaissance styles. Today, it is organized into three distinct college houses: Fischer Hassenfeld, Ware, and Riepe, and remains a central landmark of undergraduate life on campus. (this from their website).

The chimney reconstruction and renovation is just 1 part of a giant $200 million revitalization project at the Quad that includes everything from upgrading windows, plumbing, HVAC, mechanical, painting, paving and more. The University continues to make significant investments in existing College Houses and campus infrastructure.

We started erecting scaffolding in the interior courtyards of Ware College House for roof repair/replacement, chimney repairs, and exterior masonry repointing. This work improved the building envelope, reducing leaks and humidity impacting the interior. Our scaffold provided multiple trades access to the various parts of the exterior.

Each house has multiple chimneys, as you can see, and renovation crews worked around the campus in a well-coordinated effort to complete the project on time and within budget.

Much of our scaffold had to be carefully erected on the roof areas to access the chimneys. We used foam and wood to protect the roof from any issues.

Several stair towers were critically positioned and erected to get crews up to the roof and access to multiple chimneys are one time! We also connected several of those chimney scaffolds with access walkways that allowed everyone to get to multiple places on roof sections.

And we had approximately 14 Beta Track Hoists onsite at every other chimney access point for material lifting. We installed 4 debris, trash chutes to get material back down.

Many of the chimneys had multiple flues that needed relining, and restoration. This is truly a unique scaffold and masonry job! Credit Joseph Dugan, Inc. for keeping the timeline on track with multiple crews and projects!

In addition to the immense amount of chimney scaffolds we installed, we also erected various overhead protection systems around the base for pedestrian protection.
